POKOTABI / Kappaken
東大島河童軒
Located right by Higashi-Ojima Station, Higashi-Ojima Kappaken serves comforting and flavorful Chinese cooking, from Nanyang dark soy sauce fried rice and black vinegar sweet-and-sour pork to dim sum and hearty lunch sets.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Accompanied by the lively clatter of woks in the dining room, the fragrant fried rice is one of the first dishes worth exploring. Higashi-Ojima Kappaken offers a range of styles to suit different tastes, including Nanyang dark soy sauce fried rice coated in a rich, savory sauce, char siu lettuce fried rice accented by crisp greens, and classic shrimp fried rice. With its fluffy, distinct grains and appetizing aroma, the fried rice serves equally well as the centerpiece of a meal or as a satisfying finish.
Standing out among the main dishes is the black vinegar sweet-and-sour pork, glazed in a deeply layered, rich acidity. Tender vegetables provide a pleasing textural balance to the savory meat, pairing effortlessly with steamed rice or a round of drinks. The kitchen also turns out dim sum options such as crisp pan-fried gyoza with balanced fillings, xiao long bao soup dumplings, and long seafood spring rolls, making it easy to order several small plates to share.
At lunchtime, set meals take center stage, built around hearty mains such as stir-fried liver and garlic chives, mapo tofu, and gomoku ankake yakisoba in a thick, savory sauce. Served with small side dishes and dessert, these lunch combinations are widely enjoyed by diners looking for a substantial midday meal. With a setup combining counter and table seats, the space works just as well for a quick solo meal as it does for an evening gathering over drinks and shared Chinese fare.
